First the area is cleared of any trees, shrubs and topsoil with heavy equipment. Explosives are then used to break up the dirt and rock called overburden. When the overburden is cleared away, the coal is then carted off in large trucks.
Coal is also mined in underground mines, but the greatest volume does come from open pit operations as described in the other answer.
