As far as I know, the Helios I and Helios II spacecrafts launched in the mid 1970’s hold the record for shortest distance to the sun. They were launched into heliocentric orbit in order to study and record solar processes. At the point where the Helios series was closest to the sun the spacecrafts were approximately 45 million kilometers away, slightly inside Mercury’s orbit.
