In May 2008 scientists completed a new analysis of fossilized T-Rex proteins. This analysis confirmed that dinosaurs, at least the T-Rex , are more closely related to birds than to crocodilians. Crocodilians, the animal ground containing alligators and crocodiles, were formerly considered to be the closest living animals to dinosaurs.
Birds diverged and evolved separately from dinosaurs (some of whom were the ancestors of modern reptiles) at least 150 million years ago. So, they do probably share a common ancestor, but it existed an unimaginably long time ago—long enough that calling them distant cousins might be a stretch these days.
