Both are related closely, but a main difference is that male African lions grow manes around their neck, whereas Mountain lions do not.
Mountain lions (also called cougars, pumas, and panthers) and African lions both belong to the family Felidae, which includes all cats (big, small, and domestic). Mountain lions are the largest species of small cats and belong to the genus Felis, which includes other small cats. African lions belong to the genus Panthera, which includes the big cats: tigers, jaguars, and leopards.
