How close were the American Bison to extinction?

The American Bison was closest to extinction in the 1890s, when numbers dwindled to about 1,000 left in North America. This is a huge change compared to the 30 million that used to roam the plains before European settlers arrived. Today, about 500,000 bison are estimated to roam the North America, half of which are in Canada.
