This depends on the species of Oak tree. Many oak trees are tall growing and have extensive networks of roots both in depth and width. The root growth of a tree also depends on the environment in which it is planted. If a tree is planted in a drier climate, oaks may expend more energy on creating a deeper or wider root system in order to have access to more water. Bur or Blue Oaks can have some of the most impressive root systems, with roots recorded over 14 feet in length from trees aged 8 years or less. The further you can plant the tree from your house or pavement, the better. A conservative decision is better than having issues with roots disturbing the foundation of your house.
