The general structure of both the hybrid plug-in and electric vehicle are very similar but there is one important element that clearly distinguishes them. The plug-in hybrid has an electric motor and battery as well as a gas tank and combustion engine. In this case the two systems are connected by a generator which uses the gasoline engine to charge the battery when needed. A diagram on the cited page will outline these main differences.
