How is chlorine used in our water?

Chlorine is used as a disinfectant to stop the spread of water-borne diseases. Essentially, the chemical is used because it is relatively harmless to humans (especially if consumed in proper quantities) yet effective against contaminants. Water purification operators add chlorine in various forms (liquid or gas) to help make water safer to drink.
