How is caribou history related to volcanic eruptions?

In February of 2010 a research team comprised of scientists from the UK and the US announced they found ancient caribou bones that were not closely related to the species that currently populates this area.  It seems like they are stating in the article that a volcano that errupted in Alaska about 1000 years ago blanketed the area and killed off caribou species.  They suggest that this area was repopulated by a migration of a different species from the south.
