One way is to look for imperfections in the pearl. Something that is made in nature will not be perfect, like if it was manufactured and fake. Look for small, hairline cracks or for the shape to not be a perfect circle. Often times the color is not a perfect, polished white like a fake pearl may have.
There are a number of tests. Real pearls probably won’t be perfectly matched in sunlight, and have variations in the iridescence. Magnifying real ones will reveal ridges and irregulariteis, while fakes will be more smooth. Fake pearls tend to look flat and are also not as heavy as real pearls.
