There doesn’t seem to be any direct way to tell when a hive has honey in it. However, it appears that once bees put caps on their honeycombs to store them, the comb is filled with honey. Remember that bees take about a year to produce honey in any significant amount. When they do produce honey, a well-established hive can produce 30 to 60 pounds of it. In order to be certain that you have excess honey in your hive, it would probably be a good idea to harvest your honey in the spring because the bees need to eat their honey in order to last through the winter.
