Apparently there’s you need a microscope and an entomologist’s degree. Female lady bugs tend to be slightly larger but males but they are otherwise hard to differentiate one from the other. One can tell the two apart best when they are mating as shown HERE; the male is clearly smaller than the female.
The differences between male and female ladybugs are not apparent. Below is an x-rated picture of two ladybugs mating which illustrates the lack of differences in appearance between males and females.
