There are probably several different ways to make a self-watering garden. One way is to use the excess water from a central air conditioning unit. Instead of letting your air conditioner waste hundreds of gallons of water per year, you could use that water to continually water a garden. What you do is take the hose that spews the unused water and aim it over your garden. You can easily make homemade nozzles so the water is spouted out evenly over all the plants in your garden. This obviously would need to be tweaked and experimented with to get it just right, but if you spend a little time it could be a great way to save water.
