The largest amount of acid rain is created by industries, which may make you feel helpless as to what you can do to prevent this environmental problem. However, there are some things you can do personally to prevent acid rain. Instead of driving everywhere, try to cut down on when you use your car. Walk to places nearby or take the bus. Another thing you can do is carpool with friends and relatives so that you take one car instead of two. Try to put off using the heat and AC in your house for as long as possible. Don’t use a lot of water by running the dishwasher or washing machine unless it’s full. Turn off lights when you leave a room and make sure to turn off power strips when you are not using your appliances. Speak to your local utility company about the opens they provide in terms of switching to alternative power sources instead of oil and coal.
All of these techniques help to lessen your carbon footprint, reduce the amount of fossil fuel you are using and overall help prevent acid rain.
Humans release among other gases, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, which convert to sulfuric acid and nitric acid, respectively.
Electricity generation, factories, and cars all contribute to acid rain, but coal power plants take the cake.
What can you do?
Use fuel efficient, Hybrid or Electric cars or better yet, carpool, use public transportation or bike, and consider other sources of electricty. Turn off lights and electronics, use energy efficient appliances, lower your thermostate in the winter and increase the number for the summer (and turn off while you are away), and insulate.
Stay informed. Join organizations that support efforts to save the environment.
