How can you get rid of invasive plants like English ivy without hurting native species?

First, cut all the vines that have climbed up trees or posts. Remove as much as you can. Get rid of ivy at ground level by pulling at the roots – maybe use a garden shovel. Mulch & compost the area, and check often throughout the next year to get rid of any new sprouts.
