How can you be sure that old canned food doesn’t have botulism or some other toxin?

If the food was packaged commercially, there is little risk of botulism because of special sterilization measures. To be certain, and to be safe whenever eating home-canned foods, cook them at a boiling temperature for at least a minute before eating them; this should kill toxins. Never eat food that smells odd, has any visible growth on it or if the container or lid is bulging, as this signals bacterial growth.
