Rainwater can be used as a power source if it is collected and channeled so that a running stream of water is present. The 1st link below shows home systems that utilize small hydro-turbines. Although it will only generate power as long as the water is continuously running. There are also small-scale water wheels that you simply connect up to a drainage pipe (2nd link below). If you are thinking about large-scale solutions, dams are already using rivers to generate electricity. Your local utility company is probably using hydropower as a portion of their renewable energy portfolio.
