A type of grass called Switch Grass is cheap to grow and provides a high yield crop that can make a lot of ethanol for a low cost. It is native to the US and grows up to 8-9 feet tall. Using grass to produce energy would be the same process as using corn to produce ethanol. The grass is a more efficient crop to convert to ethanol than corn since we use the whole plant rather than just the grain.
Using switch grass also doesn’t take away from food source. We can produce it quickly and use it efficiently. It’s a good compliment to other sources of biofuel and we should be focusing more effort on integrating it into our system.
