How can we use CO2 levels to measure environmental degradation?

That is a difficult question to answer because it is very difficult to measure levels of environmental degradation in general.  There are so many factors taken into account with it that all we can accurately say is that environmental degradation is occuring.  However, if we were to use CO2 as a means of measuring, we could take into account the total amount of CO2 emissions, the percentage of CO2 in the atmosphere in order to tell how much was contributing to use as a greenhouse gas, and how much was being naturally processed by trees and such.  However, environmental degradation goes much farther than this, so even if this could be accurately measured, it wouldn’t tell us too much unfortunately.
