To illustrate, producing a new product from new material requires a series of steps. These are: finding and excavating the material, refining it, manufacturing the product and shipping it. Now if we use material that we already have, we can skip the first 2 parts in that process, namely finding and excavating the material, in some cases we can even deal away with refining it or at least reducing the amount of refinement needed. We can calculate the amount of energy saved by eliminating the first two phases, that’s how we can put figures on the effects of recycling.
