One of the most important things we can do to foster a sense of environmental stewardship in children is to allow them to play outside in natural environments. Playgrounds and sand boxes are fun, but children need to have time playing amongst the trees, rolling in grass, collecting rocks, and hiding in the shrubs. If they value the natural world as a place of peace and play, then they will be more likely to take care of it when they grow up.
