Water is currently delivered to places far, far away from the watersheds where it originated, often to desert areas where water would otherwise be very scarce. An example is Las Vegas- a desert city that ships in huge amounts of water from other states to support it’s very unsustainable use of water. We can stop this kind of misuse by changing water policy to recognize water scarcity and price it accordingly. Even the utilities that supply water do not adequately account for the risks of water scarcity through changes in weather, water quality and supply. There are already lawsuits between states that supply water to neighboring states and those that receive it over water scarcity issues. We need to recognize these risks and scarcities and stop using water as if there are endless amounts at our disposal.
There are also everyday things that you can do to help conserve water. Some important things are to make sure you don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth, and to also make sure you don’t take long showers. In addition, check to make sure that you don’t have any water leaks, and utilize water-saving faucets and toilets. The link posted at the bottom lists more ways in which to save water!
