There is no fool proof way to minimize the carbon footprint of the shipping industries, but the solutions come from both sides of the equation. One way to shrink the footprint is to develope better technology in transportation. The other side of the coin is to subsidize and offset the carbon footprint. For instance planting enough trees to offset the emissions from a flight.
Or, you could buy from local farmer’s markets and support local companies like Ma and Pa stores. Don’t support franchises as much because they transport goods from all over the country. Buy cars built in the US, since 2.7% of all carbon emissions come from maritime shipping. Yes, you can help as an individual by supporting neighboring businesses.
