In a recent Barnes and Nobles read (“Switch” by Chip and Dan Heath), creating awareness is often best achieved through visible evidence. If some kind of device can be created that VISIBLY monitors energy output of certain items in the home such as plugged-in laptops, lights left on in rooms with no occupants, microwave use, etc Americans might see the bigger picture. As the idiom goes, “money talks.” As a sociology major, research talks even more. If a study can be conducted monitoring the above mentioned appliances in set homes in all 50 states for even just a month and then provided comparative monetary expenditures for the energy wasted, I bet more homes would use less energy.
