Your consumer dollar packs a lot of political power. By simply choosing the products with the least packaging, you are acting as a representative of the population who wants to see less of it. If you love a product that’s a little over the top with regards to packaging, try writing a letter to the company. You might want to get some other people in on it, as bigger companies need to hear more voices to make changes. Shop at grocery stores with a bulk aisle, and reuse the bags and containers you put your bulk selections into. Buying fresh veggies instead of canned or frozen will also reduce your personal packaging consumption. Another idea is to head to the butcher’s when you want meat: grocery stores pack their meat in unsustainable styrofoam. The butcher will wrap your fresh cut in parchment paper.
