One exciting solution, which is being evaluated right now, is making the bottles out of a soy or corn based material so that it is biodegradable and/or compostable.
The best thing we can probably do is to not use water bottles that are thrown away after one use. We would be much better off if people used more durable plastic, metal or glass containers that can be used and reused for years and don’t end up in the landfill. Yes it is exciting to think of the possibility of compostable “plastics” but they are also quite energy intensive to produce–approximately 50MJ/kg– especially if they are just used once.
