How can we make more sustainable woods like Maple less susceptible to rot and water damage so more people will want to buy them?

The only ways currently available to better preserving maple is to finish it with additional chemicals or oils, significantly increasing the cost of the wood and potentially increasing environmental harms and waste. Maple itself is a difficult hardwood to work with and already expensive, which is why it is not currently used as a more staple construction material. It is however, used in a lot of furniture and cabinetry, where people are more willing to pay a premium for the nicer wood.
