There are basically two different kinds of solar panel: electrical and water. In both cases, the materials tend to wear, and eventually need to be replaced. However, the electrical panels tend to be more resiliant to wear.
One of the areas of research in solar energy involves determining what exactly is happening at the atomic level in real time to various atomic structures. This has not really been possible until recently when IBM found a way to modify a piece of laboratory equipment so that they could analyze atomic states in real time. Hopefully, this breakthrough will enable the research and development of newer materials for solar panels, yielding greater efficiency and higher eco-friendliness of the materials.
