How can we make mining for diamonds more environmentally friendly?

Diamond miners are attempting to minimize their effect on the environment by extracting as little soil as possible, replacing soil and topsoil when mining is complete, minimizing footprints and tracks from vehicles, and attempting to regrow native vegetation when mining has ceased.

In terms of industrial diamonds (much larger volume than gems), 88% are not mined but are made synthetically. China makes the most, more than 4 billion carats a year, and the US imports most of the synthetic diamonds it uses from China.
