Buying organic cotton is a good first step. Cotton crops and considered the dirtiest, using the highest amount of insecticides. Cotton makes up 2.5% of the world’s agriculture, yet uses 16% of the world’s insecticides. The seven most common insecticides used are either suspected or confirmed carcinogens. Additionally, at least 925 gallons of water are used to create one pound of cotton.
Organic cotton does have a couple of downfalls too. It still requires large amounts of water to grow. Alternative fibers such as hemp are probably more sustainable. Also, many companies selling organic cotton clothing may only be using 1-3% organic cotton.
