Assuming you mean biodegradable when you say break down (and not just the ability to fold into smaller sizes), it would be counter productive to make cardboard last longer through material composition changes. Instead, industry can rethink the way cardboard packaging, as an example, is used. Instead of using a box one time for a delivery and then discarding it, companies should take back their packaging for products and reuse it. In this way, the cardboard lasts longer in its useful state while still maintaining its ability to be used in compost piles or mulching applications.
