There are many architects that are asking this answer and exploring some answers. They can get creative, such as building a home made out of “rammed earth”. (Dirt that is very, very squashed down). Not only do these homes blend better with the environment, but they keep heat in during the day, which is then conveniently to have when nightfall comes. In fact, no matter what the temperature is outside, an equilibrium that is comfortable is able to be (pretty much) maintained. So that if it is very hot outside, the temperature inside is naturally kept cool. Therefore, less energy is used to heat the homes.
