When you have to replace an electric appliance, look for an Energy Star-rated one. Energy Star appliances are sometimes a little more expensive, but are much more energy efficient and pay for themselves with the energy they save. You can also replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) – CFLs use much less energy and create less heat than ordinary bulbs. Home insulation is also key to reducing waste. By insulating your windows, crawlspace, and water heater, you can greatly reduce the energy used to heat your home (though consult an expert before trying to insulate something that produces heat and might catch your insulation on fire!)
