How can we get where we use less natural resources?

We must adopt new lifestyles.  Instead of driving ourselves to work, why not have all the people in the neighborhood who need a ride to work meet at one person’s house, and then one person can drive 4 people in their car, instead of everyone driving themselves. (We should become more dependent on each other, more trusting, more willing to share!) We need to realize that we don’t always have to use fuel to get a job done! We are very capable ourselves, and humans endured for 50,000 to 200,000 years before we got the internal combustion engine… why do we feel there is no future without increased energy demand? In my version of a perfect future, we do not rely so heavily on fossil fuels, and people learn to live with the amount of energy that the earth naturally provides (instead of taking everything we can get from it and never caring to think, can I replace this?)—meaning we will use only, solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, bio-masss, and bio-mechanical energy sources (and probably a few others which have not been invented yet — but we’re working on them — like using fusion power or how about harnessing gravity to our advantage in generating energy!)
