The majority of waste produced at festivals can be attributed to food — paper or styrofoam plates and bowls, plastic utensils, napkins. As much as possible, festivals should use compostable plates, bowls, and utensils made from recycled materials. They can also significantly reduce the amount of material used for each meal. For example, it is common for a hot dog to be served with an extra, unnecessary piece of paper.
We can influence this change in festivals by demanding that environmentally friendly products and practices be used. Publicizing a festival’s eco-effort could attract more people and generate more money. Additionally, reducing wastefulness can cut costs that festival organizers would otherwise spend on waste management.
