The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently evaluates and rates vehicle fuel economy. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is working on a variety of standards and protocols for different hardware and systems before 2012, which is when most of these new electric cars, with projected high fuel economies, will debut. The SAE ratings may be a factor in the EPA ratings.
