I think we can eliminate world hunger in finding a balance between giving money to poor nations that we do not need and buying thinks that we simply like. We need growth in the industrial world, but we also need to take a step back a bit and give away some of our money.
World hunger is not a “food problem” it is a distribution problem. There is enough food on this planet to feed everyone and then some. But, many people in the developing world do not have access to this food. Also many people around the world who used to grow their own foodhave moved to cities to make MONEY. Now they must purchase their food but do not have enough money to do so. One way to eliminate world hunger would be for people to be self-sufficient and grow much of their own food, or live near a farmer who can provide them with food for a trade, rather than money.
There are many organizations that are working toward this goal. By focusing on the source of the problem rather than only providing immediate food. Organizations like Heifer International are focused on sustainability. They provide “global assistance to struggling countries has been characterized by long-term development, rather than short-term relief.”
The founder of Heifer International Dan West states that “after immediate needs for food, shelter, fresh water, clothing and other necessities have been met, Heifer works within communities to empower disaster survivors with the economic means – such as livestock, training and other resources – to rebuild their families, their neighborhoods and their hope for sustainable futures.”
So by working with positive organizations and donating our time, money, and attention we can help change world hunger.
I agree with juliag that an important part of eliminating world hunger is empower those in developing countries. To become empowered to supply their own food, they need to learn about sustainable farming methods, reforestation, and how to restore soils so that they will be fertile enough to grow crops. It will help to give money to provide food, water, etc., but the causes of the hunger problem should be addressed at the same time.
