There are many possible answers to that question. As a former employee of a manufacturing plant that produced parts for prototypes of commercial trucks, I have seen the trucking industry decline rapidly over the past couple years, mainly due to the rising prices of gasoline and the inefficiency of excessive transportation of goods. My opinion is that reducing trucking miles – and their inherent carbon footprint – will be a matter of a lifestyle shift. Curbing our consumer habits will entail grassroots movements to emphasize shopping at local farmers markets, etc.
