The truth is all farms are going to need a lot of fertilizer for their crops. One excellent way to reduce the negative wastes that result from most fertilizers is to simply use manure. Cow, chicken, and horse manure are excellent fertilizers and are completely natural. The use of manure is much better for the environment than putting nitrogen and phosphorus rich artificial fertilizers into the environment. It is also important that farmers use responsible irrigation practices. If there is an excess of water in the soil, the waste of fertilizers is washed away and most often ends up in local waterways. One example of this is the Gulf of Mexico dead zone that is a result of too much nitrogen and phosphorus rich artificial fertilizers being washed into the Mississippi River and ending up in the Gulf.
