It may not be addressed in previous answers, but the best way to conserve healthy soil is to allow living things to thrive in it.
Where is the most fertile soil? In dense forests, where diverse ecosystems and complicated food chains have been established. Concentrated biodiversity packs the soil full of nutrients and minerals, provides great drainage and moisture content, and protects soil from drying out under the sun.
Allowing life to thrive naturally in soil does not mean simply creating wildlife refuges and parks where industrial and agricultural activities are not allowed – though these things are immensely important. It also means not polluting nearby water sources, and improving nearby air quality.
