How can UV light be used to kill bacteria in water?

Water purification from UV light treatment is usually only performed in specialized chambers designed for it. The radiation from UV light damages the DNA of microorganisms, and if damage is done beyond repair, the microorganisms die. This form of treatment is useful because it doesn’t leave any chemical residues behind. However, this method does not prevent re-contamination.

One popular method of doing this is with a product called a SteriPen. It is a hand held compact UV light that is inserted into water bottles and held there for a minute.
