One of the best ways to make a supply chain more environmentally-friendly (as well as more cost effective) is to reduce waste at all levels. Changing the product design can lead to less waste and having less packaging or small packaging can reduce waste. Using renewable materials also makes the supply chain greener. Generally there is going to be some wasted raw materials in making the product so making sure those materials are recyclable or reusable is another way to be more green.
Energy savings is another way to be greener. Looking at manufacturing a company could see if there was a more efficient, energy-star approved machine to make their product. Or they could redesign the product to use less machinery. All buildings used in the supply chain could also become LEED certified. The transport of the product could also be made greener by using hybrid trucks and clean diesel vehicles.
