How can substances be so toxic to the Earth when they all come from natural sources at some point?

Everything is toxic in large enough amounts. Take mercury for example, it is naturally occuring but when added to the water stream it is highly toxic to organisms. The important thing to note that is without human intervention and exposure, most mercury would not be in the water stream.
