We study rocks for many reasons, and some might seem without relevance to the lives of modern humans. One important area of study is geothermal energy, by which scientists tap the heat from deep within the Earth to be transformed into electrical power. Currently more than twenty nations including the U.S. produce some geothermal power and advances may help us diversify with more renewable energy sources. Seismology, the study of earthquakes, helps scientists predict quakes to provide more advanced warning and save lives.
