How can smart grids help the environment?

A “smart-grid” is a fancy term that describes general improvements to city and country wide power grids. America’s power grid is laughable at best and there are countless improvements we could make. A smarter grid would save electricity for peak hours of the day, something we have no way of doing now. A smart grid would also incorporate more renewable energy sources, be less prone to outages, and ultimately let us use less power.
