How can smaller engines for cars help the environment?

Smaller engines often require less fuel to travel a similar distance than their larger counterparts.  This leads to less carbon emissions, as well as lower gasoline consumption rates.  The lowered emission rates lead to a smaller impact on human induced climate change, and the lower gasoline consumption allows petroleum reserves to last longer.
