How can signals pass through the air?

This question is a big ambiguous. By signals, do you mean waves? If so these waves are forms of energy moving through the air and are vectors.  These vectors are governed by physical laws and influence each other (e.g. electric and magnetic waves).

I am sure you are familiar with E=mc^2.  If you already do not know, this equation symbolizes the mass-energy equivalence, where in quantum physics, energy and mass are seen as two different forms of one thing.
