Many people who avoid sericulture and silk do so because silk worms are often thrown into boiling water after their silk has been harvested.  By killing the worms in this fashion, leftover individual silk strands can be harvested from them, which may increase production rate.  However, quitting this practice could make the silk industry more palatable to a new range of consumers.
