How can scientists know which volcanoes are still active and which ones are dormant?

Scientists are able to monitor the amount of volcanic activity in a particular location, which gives a measure of how active a volcano is. Warning signs such as earthquakes and the emission of certain gasses become more prominent as the volcano is about to erupt. Dormant volcanoes do not show the same signs of activity. Dormant volcanoes should not be confused with extinct volcanoes, however. Extinct volcanoes have not erupted in 10,000 years and are not expected to erupt again. Meanwhile, dormant volcanoes are simply undergoing a period of inactivity and could become active again after a period of time.
