Well, for starters, it does take a lot of energy to run a recycling facility. However, some facilities are working to cut the amount of energy that may be wasted during operation. For example, the company Waste Management of Oregon is opening a new center that is built to meet LEED standards for environmentally-friendly practices and energy savings. A rainwater-harvesting system is designed into it, and the design features lots of natural lighting.
Another good idea would be to design a system that took a lot of the heat that is given off from melting down plastics and metals, and using that heat to help power homes or even to generate more electricity for the plant itself.
